We Met Them At The Door

A Song from the 1930s Sydney rent strikes
tune: I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles

"for we met them at the door,
And we knocked them on the floor,
Bankstown and Newtown, we made the cops feel sore,
They outnumbered us ten to one,
And were armed with stick and gun,
But we fought well, we gave them hell,
When we met them at the door."

Notes

This verse comes from 'Forever Striking Trouble' originally broadcast as a radio program on Hindsight on Radio National in March 1999. The program explored the political activism of the poor and unemployed in Sydney in the 1930s, through interviews with participants in their 80s and 90s, and historians. It was recalled by Jocka Burns, then 90 years old and still a member of the Communist party.
