Let's Sing!

A Song by Steve Suffet©Steve Suffet 2008

- [play]

Night is upon us and gone is the sun,
We gather together, our day's work is done,
Open the bottle and pour out the wine,
Let's raise up our voices in verses so fine,
Working people of all nations unite!

Let's sing for the sailor upon the salt seas,
And sing for the keeper a-raising the bees,
Let's sing for the ploughman a-turning the earth.
And sing for the midwife attending the birth,
Working people of all nations unite!

Let's sing for the surgeon with hands in the blood,
And sing for the roughneck way down in the mud,
Let's sing for the trucker a-hauling the load,
And sing for the trooper patrolling the road,
Working people of all nations unite!

Let's sing for the poet and the verses she wrote,
Let's sing for the singer with a song in her throat,
Let's sing for the actor on screen or on stage,
Let's sing for the writer putting words on a page,
Working people of all nations unite!

Let's sing for the cashier and clerk in the store,
The butcher, the baker, the barber, and more,
Let's sing for the slumlord and long may he dwell,
With the Devil himself in the fires of Hell,
Working people of all nations unite!

Coda:
We've nothing to lose but our chains,
We've a world to win! (5 times)

Notes

Many thanks to Steve Suffet for permission to add this song to the Union Songs collection.

Steve writes:
"Greetings again from New York City.
Here is another song for the Union Songs website. I wrote "Let's Sing" in 2008 with a little posthumous help from Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. I sing the lead vocal and play guitar, while the additional vocals are by Anne Price and an impromptu chorus of my friends.
Have a good holiday season and a happy New Year. "
