MATILDA’S WAR WALTZ

A song by Phyl Lobl ©Phyl Lobl 2001

We’re good little Aussies as good as can be
At tennis and cricket and swimming in the sea,
We think we ‘re good sports but its clear as the day,
The heart of the country, and the country’s hearts,
Are as hard as the rock and as cold as the clay.
We’re waltzing, we’re waltzing, we’re waltzing away,
Doing a war dance with the U.S.of A,
Matilda is waltzing, she cannot refrain,
Though the danger seems real, I can’t help but feel,
The whole bloody dance is insane.

Our leaders have shown they can’t lie straight in bed
They lie and they lie to the people instead,
Its hard to believe that the people don’t see
Perhaps its not bothering most of the nation,
But its sure as hell’s bothering me.
We’re waltzing,we’re waltzing, we’re waltzing away,
Doing a war dance with the U.S.of A,
Matilda is waltzing, she cannot refrain,
Is it armament makers or oil trade shakers,
Who are driving the War Gravy Train ?

Our Navy is charged to deter and deny,
The Government can’t look us straight in the eye.
I wish we could cast them upon the high seas,
Then maybe we’d get a significant difference
In caring for our refugees.
We’re waltzing,we’re waltzing, we’re waltzing away,
Doing a war dance with the U.S.of A,
Matilda is waltzing, she cannot refrain
The razor wire fence, doesn’t make sense
But it won an ‘ election campaign’.

Its got to be close to ‘non-compos-mentis’
To privatise running of detention centres
And it must quite close to committing a crime
To profit from terror,to traumatize kids,
To bully and badger and prolong their time .
We’re waltzing,we’re waltzing, we’re waltzing away,
Doing a war dance with the U.S.of A,
Matilda is waltzing she cannot refrain,
We are all human, but only the brave,
The morally brave are humane.
We are all human, but only the brave,
The morally brave are humane.
